About Great Bay Half Marathon & 5K

The Great Bay Half Marathon and 5K is a popular running event in Newmarket, New Hampshire, earning its name from the Great Bay hills in which the race takes place. The history of the Great Bay Half Marathon & 5K traces its roots back to 2003, when a group of local runners and race directors got together to create a new running event for the community. The race was originally called the Great Bay Challenge and was offered as a 10K race. In 2004, the race was expanded to a half marathon, and the name was changed to the Great Bay Half Marathon.

The Great Bay Half Marathon has continued to grow in popularity over the years. In 2014, the 5K event was added, and the race now attracts over 1,000 runners and walkers each year. The race is a great way to experience the beauty of Newmarket. Runners will also pass by the Great Bay Estuary along the course, treating participants to sightings of wildlife such as Great Blue Herons and Bald Eagles!

In addition to being a great running event, the Great Bay Half Marathon and 5K is a way to give back to your community. Runners have the opportunity to fundraise on behalf of local charity, Girls on the Run New Hampshire, which provides girls in 3rd-8th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness.
